As I plan my first day of my Christmas break from school, I’m excited to wrap presents, clean the house, light the pine scented candles, and bake some treats. First, I quickly glance at facebook, scan emails, the news is on in the background and the more I read, the more I listen…the more I become painfully aware of the sorrows, struggles, sickness, pain, death and brokenness that is right this minute enveloping those I love and those I don’t know in this broken world in which we live.
On Christmas morning, in many homes, including my own, there will be a magical joy of Christmas …the presents, the scrumptious smells, the foods, the lights, the laughter of children; while simultaneously people starve, die, and experience horrors that I cannot imagine. And this shakes my soul . I’m suddenly feeling so very selfish. Sure, I’ve sent money to charities, I’ve purchased and wrapped and given gifts to the Angel tree. I’ve prayed for others. But, it’s not enough.
I want my family, my children to experience joy, and magic on Christmas. I want to spend the time in my church worshiping joyfully and thanking our great creator for the gifts he has given me.
The moment Jesus was born must have been like that…There were those who were in his presence and those who heard the news that were celebrating, presenting him with gifts, and weeping with joy, and worshiping; yet, simultaneously pain, sorrow, and horrors abounded.
As I reflect on this, I realize nothing I can do will ever be enough. I cannot solve the problems of the world. That’s exactly what Christmas is about. Focusing on the one who can. We can’t ignore the hurts, poverty, pain…but, there is something we must do first. Worship and celebrate the precious gift our God gave us on that first Christmas day. In the midst of the tree, the lights, and Santa; we can make sure that he is in the forefront of our celebrations, that we rejoice in his presence. As the celebrations commence, we can continue to remember, and to pray for those who suffer…and commit ourselves to listen, so that when he calls us to do more, we will hear him.

Last Saturday morning I woke up at 5:30 in the morning and made a long “To Do List.” I had afternoon plans and my goal was to finish everything before time to go. I was so proud of myself as I rushed around checking off things on the list. A few hours later, I sat down to read that day’s devotional in “The Upper Room.” The thought for the day said, “The most important task God has for us today may not be on our to-do list.” Wow. Then, I looked up the suggested Bible passage, Luke 10:25-37. In my bible beside the passage, I had previously written some notes (I think they were from one of Jay’s sermons). The notes I had written said, “A day’s most important meetings may not be the ones we’ve put on our calendar.” God got my attention that morning!

I’m a list maker, and couldn’t survive without my calendar or “To Do” list, but I have to be careful not to get tunnel vision; not to get so hung up on THE list that I miss out on what’s happening around me, that I miss out on opportunities to spread God’s message, to be neighborly, to be more like Jesus (Maybe I should add those to my “To Do” list J) What about you? Do you have room on your calendar for what God is calling you to do today?

Have you been looking for the silver bullets in your life this week? Mine came at me in the form of…droopy plants.

Upon returning from an out of town trip, I neglected our backyard for a couple of days. I knew it had stormed while we were gone, so I didn’t really worry about the plants needing water immediately. I was wrong. Wow, what a mess it was when I ventured back there today. Dirt, leaves, and pine needles lined the bottom of the pool and the pool deck. The plants were wilting and beginning to dry out. They were surviving but definitely not flourishing. Tonight, after a little time, work, and water they are beginning to perk back up.

Similarly, our souls can begin to wilt and dry up after just a short time of neglect. Fortunately with a little TLC we can bring it back up to par. Sure we can survive and get by with minimal attention, but if we want to flourish we have to treat our spiritual lives with intentional, deliberate care. How is your soul today? Take the time to water it with prayer, study and worship!

While I was lying in the pool last night on a raft, gazing up at the almost full moon and one bright star, I realized how much I take for granted, how much I miss in the busy-ness of life. God wants us to enjoy life. God has given us amazing gifts in which to delight. This week I’ve made it a point to simply make time and do just that, enjoy what he has provided. The time spent riding the waves with my daughter, playing putt putt with friends, reading, laughing, and night swimming in the pool have created invaluable memories this week and led to prayers of thanksgiving.

Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones”

Have you laughed today? Have you taken time to enjoy the blessings that God has provided? So many of us live busy lives, full schedules, and problems to solve, etc. which cause us to forget to enjoy the wonders he has provided. Now go have some fun!

A little silver bullet buzzed right at me while teaching yoga class last week. We were about to move into tree pose, so I began my usual spiel, “Find your balance, find a point to fix your gaze, don’t fix your gaze on me, find a stationary place ahead of you…” As I’m saying this, I’m preparing to do the same, looking into a class of “swaying trees” will sometimes cause me to lose my balance, so I gaze ahead where I usually look at a blank spot on the wall. But today, I find myself gazing straight into the eyes of Jesus. That’s right, I said straight into the eyes of Jesus. There was a huge sketch of Jesus in a little alcove, just behind the room I was teaching in, the kind of sketch with such life like eyes you can feel the person looking at you. For a moment, I was speechless as I locked eyes with Jesus. Speechless as I heard the words I had just said to the class…fix your eyes on a stationary point. While balancing in Tree Pose, I’m looking into the eyes of Jesus and recalling a hymn I used to sing in church as a child:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

That my friends, is what I call a silver bullet. It buzzed right at me, and I felt it! Life gets crazy here on earth. Our lives can be like a roller coaster ride, full of ups and downs. Somedays more than others. Sometimes, life just doesn’t seem fair. In spite of our best efforts, troubles come. What we can hold onto is the knowledge that in the midst of the good and bad, we can fix our eyes on Jesus, and be reminded that he is beside us, the task he has set before us, and that there is more to come. Fix your eyes on Jesus, he is our stationary point, when you are wavering, he’s standing solid waiting to return your gaze.

Hebrews 12 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I watched as my friend, nieces and daughter climbed up to the top of a water slide at Wild Adventures, “The Cyclone, it’s a slide where you sit in a huge tube with 3 other people and you are shot out of a tube and then swirled around, like you are being flushed down a huge toilet bowl. I could see the fear on their faces as they stood at the top and looked down, just before they took the plunge. But, they did it together laughing and screaming the whole way down, ready to do it again. Sometimes, it helps to “Take the Plunge” with other people.

Prayer can be scary. I find that the scariest thing for me about prayer is praying with others, especially others whom I’ve prayed with before. Like standing at the top of the water slide and climbing back down the stairs instead of taking the plunge, I’ve let fear stop me. Maybe I’ll pray for them alone, or in my head, but pray “with” them, that’s the part where I’ve backed off. Sometimes though, God is calling us to pray that type of prayer, to join hands with others and take the plunge. Last week, before a recent doctor appointment, a relative asked if she could pray about it together with me and other family members. She was a bit nervous about this and had thought it out and written down her words ahead of time. It was powerful prayer, facing fear, stepping out of her comfort zone and boldly taking the plunge as she prayed before our almighty creator. Prayer is not about our eloquent words, it’s about faith, it’s about trust, and it’s about obeying our father. Once you take the plunge, it may be that you come out ready to go again, it’s a beautiful thing!

My daughter has been wanting a “slip n’ slide” for years. And for years I have been saying, “No! That’s too dangerous.” So, today we took a trip to Big Lots with her own money, after there was some begging (which sounded more like a miniature lawyer pleading her case) followed by a call by me to check with Dad, I surprised her by saying yes and letting her buy it. We got it home and it was much smaller than I envisioned. And she was much more careful than I thought she’d be. She was ready. Why didn’t I let her get it before? I wanted to protect her. Why did I let her get it today? She saved, she waited, and she’d matured a bit. Okay, she could still get hurt, but I felt like it’s something she could now handle.

SPOILER ALERT: If haven’t heard Drew’s now famous “Habanero” sermon…you might want to read this later, or actually, it might not hurt to read on and do a little reading before you hear it, or if you’ve been there a little review of these verses may be of value, I know I found new jewels when I dove back in to these verses: Matthew 7:7-11; John 14:13-14; John 15:7; 1 John 3:21-22; 1 John 5:14-15. Herein lies the danger, Do we understand the instructions? Drew focused specifically on Matthew 7:7-11., where the directions clearly tell us what to do: Ask, Seek, Knock. If we do those things God will give us anything, right? (Here is where the understanding part comes in) God’s promise is: “I will take care of you” He will take care of our needs. He will take care of us like a father, the perfect father. Does this means he will give us ANYTHING we ask for? Sometimes, he takes care of our needs by saying NO! (That explains why I haven’t won the lottery yet…) Maybe he says no because it’s something that is harmful to us, maybe he says no because he has other plans for our life. A No can lead us closer to God.

Sometimes God says SLOW, he makes us wait. When we wait we realize who’s in charge. When we wait it changes us on the inside. There is value in waiting, and in continuing to ask. Waiting can bring us closer to God.

Sometimes God says GO! And we are amazed by the miracle that we asked and he gave it right to us, we almost don’t believe it…and our response should be thank you! Receiving what we ask for brings us closer to God.

Prayer is all about relationship. The purpose is to always bring us nearer to him, He always says GROW. Whatever avenue that looks, like. (no, slow, go…we always grow). Prayer allows us to love him, be loved by him, to become more like him.

Drew’s Habanero of prayer, the potent promise of God, is one that we should not dilute, or qualify, God will care for us like a father. Thru prayer we press in, get closer, feel his love, and listen and seek to understand his directions, the directions and love of our perfect father.

No Diving. That’s what it says all along the shallow end of the pool. Why? Because if you dive too shallow you are most likely going to be stopped by a painful encounter with a cement floor. That’s what happens with our faith– sometimes we dive in, but dive too shallow and Bam! we abruptly stop when we hit that cement floor. Maybe we need to go deeper, so we can really take a dive. Going deeper can be scary, we might not be able to see the floor, we might not quite know what to expect. That’s why we’re going to go deeper together. Phillipians 3 says: “ 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Put on your scuba gear, get out your goggles and let’s press on toward the goal as we dive deeper together!

This week was really a busy one, and in the midst of it my family and I spent a long time looking for the charger for a small video camera. I wanted to be able to use it to record my daughter’s dance dress rehearsal. Even though I had other cameras, I really wanted to use this one because it hooks right to the USB port on my computer, and I could easily upload the video. We put off doing other needed things and stayed up past bedtime searching unsuccessfully for this charger. It was only the next morning while trying to focus on a devotional (with my mind wandering to the lost charger) that I remembered this camera doesn’t have a flash. It wouldn’t have worked well in the dark auditorium.

I realized we had spent time, energy and focus searching for the wrong thing! Which led to this thought…how often do I get off track? How often do I spend time, and energy searching for something that just doesn’t work? Searching for the Wrong thing? That’s where we as Christians have to be careful. Distractions surround us. Satan plans it that way. It’s easy to get off track or to be led astray. How do we maintain focus on the right things? Go straight to the sourcethrough prayer and the Bible. We can also surround ourselves with others who will “watch our back” and let us know when we wander. Proverbs 11:14 advises “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

Have a great week as you continue your journey focusing on the right things!

It’s such an inconvenience when you’re driving along on your usual route headed to your destination and run into a detour. Sometimes the detour is laid out for you; sometimes you have to figure out a new route all on your own. One little detour can make you arrive late at your destination, cause you to get lost, or just throw off your plans a bit. Sometimes, though inconvenient, the new route might offer you a more scenic view, and give you the chance to see things you haven’t seen before.

That’s what happened to me this week. After being diagnosed with seizures, the doctor told me that I can’t drive for six months. SIX MONTHS. I live forty minutes from the school where I teach, 30 minutes from most grocery stores, 30 minutes from church, and I have an 8 year old with a very active extracurricular schedule. Detour! This detour caused our family to reroute our daily plans. What I’ve found is that although the new route may be a little scary, might take a little longer, and might be very inconvenient; it has offered me a chance to enjoy the scenery. I’m enjoying extra time with my family, the pace of my day has slowed down, and I’ve learned that I am absolutely surrounded by loving people who have offered support, rides, or whatever they can do to help.

Have you run into a road block? Maybe it’s physical. Maybe it’s emotional. Maybe it’s spiritual. Maybe you’ve been detoured and you don’t have a choice. I know that many times the detours send you through rough roads and thunderstorms and not always down a pretty country road or along the palm tree- lined coastline. But, I do know that life’s detours force us to see things in new ways, to look a little deeper, and to broaden our thinking. Life doesn’t always go as we planned it, but God is with us on every detour, God can use each detour to change us, shape us and mold us. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the detour leads you away from God, instead start by finding God and follow his lead through your new route.

When traveling to an unknown destination, I love to use the GPS device on my phone. She (the GPS) often is heard saying “Recalculating route” when I miss the turn she so clearly told me to make .3 miles previously.

Have you turned on your spiritual GPS lately? How often do you think God says, “Recalculating Route,” as we venture off course? He’s given us excellent directions, told us exactly how to get there, but somehow we still manage to get lost along the way. We get distracted, lose sight of the goal, and even lose touch with his voice as redirects us. He even places guides along the route to help keep us on track, to support us when we break down, and to keep us company on the journey.

In our local church one way to build such a support team is to sign up for a small group. God intends for us to “do life” together. God guides us, speaks to us and loves us through each other.

Last weekend I was getting my hair done in a salon that had just changed locations. (In fact, they moved in right next door to The Chapel’s youth building). It was funny to listen to the stylists each time the phone rang. The customers on the other end had first gone to the previous location, read the “moved” sign, and were searching for the new location. With each call the stylists would throw out new landmarks, “Do you know where Angel’s Café is? No? Orlando’s Mexican Restaurant? No? Doctor’s Lab? Grandy’s?” Time and time again this conversation would be repeated. Twice, after the stylist went through the same spiel, she said incredulously, “Are you in the parking lot?” The clients had navigated their way, searched for their destination, but didn’t know when they found what they were looking for. You see, a sign hadn’t been put up yet, so you had to look a bit closer to find the place.

Most of us are searching for something. (For me, it’s usually the sunglasses that are right on top of my head). Seriously, most of us are searching for something more, something deeper. This search may have been what brought you to The Chapel or what led you to read this article today.Maybe you’ve gotten lost along the way, made a few wrong turns, asked for directions and moved past the popular landmarks. Maybe you’ve already arrived and are trying to decide where to go next or maybe you’re sitting in the parking lot staring right at your destination and you don’t even know it, maybe it’s because you’re looking for a sign that isn’t there, or maybe you just don’t SEE the sign.I don’t know where God is leading you, but I do know the route includes prayer, scripture, and giving yourself to him. We don’t have to be lost; God gave us the guide, the map, and is available to answer the call when we can’t find our way.Jer. 29:13 says “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” and Proverbs 8:17 “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me.”

Why? That’s the question I remember most from my children’s toddler years. Each answer produced another “Why?” Sometimes, I would think I had the perfect answer, yet it would still trigger another “Why?” My answer would often exceed their understanding. I would grow weary of answering before they would grow weary of asking. In an attempt to end the questioning, I’d simply sweep them up in a hug, draw them near and say, “Why? Because I love you! Why? Because I love you! Why? Because I love you!” This usually resulted in giggles, hugs and a respite from the questioning. These tiny little people looked up at me with love, and with trust. They didn’t fully understand the answers to their questions but they knew they could put their trust in me. (Sweet story? I almost forgot–These cute toddlers began to get older, and the “Whys?” still prevailed. My answers didn’t always result in hugs, and giggles all around. It often became a stern, “BECAUSE I SAID SO!” still said with love, of course.)

Like that small child, do you find yourself asking, “Why?” I do. I especially ask this question in times of tragedies, death, accidents, unfairness, violence, and suffering. There is no answer that seems fully satisfactory, no answer that completely stops the “Why?” Yet, there is a perfect answer. An answer that exceeds my understanding. A simple answer. God draws near, embraces us and answers, “Why? Because I Love You!”(or when necessary, a stern, but loving, “Because I said so.”)

This answer doesn’t make my tiny little brain understand suffering, hopelessness, or tragedies any better. But, it does provide peace. John 4:7 says, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” We, are but tiny little people, looking up asking “Why?” and he answers, “Because I love you.” Lou Giglio, In his book, I am not but I know I AM, says “I hope you see it clearly today: the cross of Christ is the place where trust in God is born. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is an act of loving kindness from a loving and trustworthy God, an undeniable demonstration of His goodness that we can cling to when our sight and understanding fail to make sense of the circumstances that surround us…..but now because of Christ we can personally know how much He loves us and believe that He is using everything that comes our way for His glory and for our ultimate good.”

This Easter are you looking for an answer. Simply .Draw. Near. and feel his embrace, hear his answer, “Because I Love You.”

When my daughter, Amber, has done something she knows is wrong she’ll often hide her eyes with her hands, or even run and hide in her room. She’s embarrassed, feels guilty, wants to be alone, separated from us.

That’s how it is when we sin. Sin separates us from God. That’s exactly why Satan’s goal is to cause us to sin. When we know we’ve done wrong, we want to keep it hidden, keep it in the darkness. I imagine that’s how Peter felt when he denied Christ. But, Christ didn’t let that happen. Right after Peter denied Christ for the third time, in Luke 22:61, “The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” Peter’s wrong had been brought out of the darkness and straight into the light; he had to look Jesus straight in the eyes (literally!). Peter’s reaction? Luke 22:62 “And he went outside and wept bitterly.”

Flash forward to Mark 16:7 ” But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” Did you catch that? And Peter. He specifically wanted Peter to get the message. The resurrection message. We see a man who thought he was in control. A man who thought by his own power, he would not deny Christ. Yet, he fell. And Jesus specifically sought him out. Peter wept, he repented and relinquished control to Christ Jesus. Peter moved on, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and shared the good news with words and actions.

Jesus calls us to bring our wrongs into the light, to come out of hiding and look him straight in the eyes. He is waiting to return the gaze with love, mercy and compassion as we repent. Just like a parent’s forgiving embrace after their child has done wrong, Jesus is waiting to embrace us with unconditional love. It is when we repent, accept his forgiveness and love, that we can move on and live a life worthy of our calling.

As I write this, I’m savoring the last bite of a Cadbury crème egg. Chocolate is my weakness, particularly these little chocolate eggs filled with sugary goodness. The problem is I know that my body is healthier and that I feel better, when I steer clear of such foods. Yet, I have once again given in to this temptation. In my moment of weakness, I can actually talk myself into reasons why it would be good for me to eat chocolate…energy boost, mood lifter, antioxidants in dark chocolate, etc. I can be strong for a little while, but the reality is if chocolate and I are alone in a room together it begins to call my name so loudly that it consumes me. Usually this happens when I’m tired, stressed, or upset. The solution? I can distance myself from the chocolate, I can establish a support system, I can have other choices available, I can write down my goals. Basically, have a plan in place before the moment of weakness occurs.

Chocolate calling my name? That’s how it is with Satan and temptation. He knows our weaknesses and moves in when we are most vulnerable to dangle the proverbial carrot right under our nose. He begins to whisper our name. He can even make us think that giving in to this temptation will get us what we need, make us better in some way. He can make us doubt what we believe. His goal? To tempt us into sin. So what can we do to protect ourselves? We can do what Jesus did. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he simply responded with The Word. Jesus knew the scripture and knew how to use it correctly.

What does this mean for us? Don’t go into battle without your weapon. Draw near to God in peaceful times, pray and get to know the scripture before battle ensues, build a support system, and make choices wisely. Temptation is certain. Giving in doesn’t have to be. Draw near to God and be prepared.

This past week-end I had the precious opportunity to gather with my family at the bedside of my grandmother during the last hours of her life on this earth. We experienced an incredible evening of sharing memories, telling stories, singing songs, reconciling differences, expressing love, voicing fears and saying goodbye as we knew the inevitable was coming. The most treasured memory for me was when we laid our hands on her and prayed. This allowed us to leave for the evening with a deep down, heartfelt peace. When the call came the next morning, letting us know that her time on earth was gone, peace was coupled with the grief. We couldn’t fully comprehend what was to come, until she was gone. It was then that we knew that we were left here with a job to do. She wanted us to carry on as a strong family, loving and caring for one another.

I wonder if that’s what it was like for Jesus and the disciples during The Last Supper. This night was a time of celebration, of remembering, and of preparation. Although Jesus explained what was going to happen, it wasn’t until after his resurrection that they fully understood. They had been prepared for a task, left with a job to do. After his resurrection, Jesus commissioned them to …”go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)

I hope your Lenten journey is preparing you in much the same way. I hope you are experiencing a time of preparation, of drawing near, of remembering, sharing, and reconciling so that we can then go forth and live out the Great Commission.

I’m not really a rollercoaster kind of girl, but I was a good sport this week-end and rode one with my daughter. There is nothing like fear to throw you right up close to God—“Please God, let me live through this, get me off of this thing.” The problem was if he was talking to me, I couldn’t hear him over my own screams. (My friend who was seated behind us thought it would be funny to video tape my screams…it seems as far as coasters go, this was a “family friendly” coaster and thus my blood curdling screams are the only ones that can really be heard.)

Isn’t that how it often goes in everyday life? Problems, Fears or tragedies send us running straight to God, but then we’re often so caught up in the screaming, complaining, and grief that we can’t hear him, we forget to feel his arms around us, and sink deeper in fear, aloneness, despair. When I was on the roller coaster, I didn’t know the ride was over, because my eyes were shut tight and I was still screaming!

God wants us to draw near to him in good times, bad times and all times. When we draw near, we have to remember to stop screaming long enough to hear, to open our eyes wide enough to see. We are human and we do feel deeply earthly pain, sorrows, tragedies, fears and uncertainties, I’m not making light of that. But as believers we can know that our time here is short, that this earthly ride will end. Jesus said, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” (John 12:32) Jesus has called us to draw near, he has called us to lift him up by loving him, obeying him, and sharing his story with others. It is when we lift him up that we can truly draw near to him.

I’m really excited about Lent this year. I’m looking forward to it the way I look forward to a vacation. Vacation, to me, means relaxing, energizing, getting away from the mundane and then returning home with a new vitality. Similarly, Lent can be a time of Spiritual renewal, a time to revive and energize, a time to escape from those things that hold us back from God, and a time to go forward living life in a changed way.

I’m a planner. Before vacations, I research in books, on the internet, and talk to people who’ve been to my destination. I find out about what activities are available, what the weather will be like, places to stay, and places to eat. I talk to my family and find out what they want most want to experience on the trip. That way we can be sure to make the most of our vacation. So, this year, I’ve been planning for Lent in much the same way: reading scripture, reading books, searching articles online, and talking to people about it. I’ve started planning my departure date, “Ash Wednesday,” and planning my agenda. Rather than starting with what will be on the agenda, I’m looking at what I will leave off so that I will be assured to have time for what is most important. Next, I’m looking at what I’ll add on, what I’ll do differently during this time.

What about you have you started planning? I’m not saying you should plan out every minute of your Lenten Itinerary, but there are some intentional choices you can make. These choices will look different for each of us. Are you ready to draw near to God? He’s already near; he’s waiting on you to make your move. James 4:8 “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.”

I had good intentions. I meant to bring in all my plants this winter. I did go outside and cover some of them… once (and never thought of them again, left them under a sheet). So, I was quite surprised when my husband called me outside last weekend to show me all the new sprouts. Not surprisingly, much of the area was covered in brown dead remains of what was once beautiful. I couldn’t believe that some had survived with little sprouts firmly rooted. I cleaned out weeds, and watered them. Just one week later, with a little sunlight and nurturing, many of these plants had beautiful flowers blossoming! These plants were made to bloom, to produce, and to bear fruit. Nurturing these neglected plants led to growth; to healthier more productive and beautiful plants.

Spiritual growth also requires nurturing. Next Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent. This is the perfect time to implement a plan for spiritual growth. When I was a child, Lent meant giving up something like candy, sodas, or chocolate. There is nothing wrong with giving these things up, but I don’t think that I really understood the reason. I thought I was just depriving myself of something I really liked. Now, I understand. Lent is a time to repent, fast and pray; A time for self-examination and reflection; A time to remove things that distract our attention from prayer. This can serve as a guide when deciding what’s meaningful for you. During Lent, some people give things up; others choose instead to add things on (like volunteering). What about you? What will Lent mean for you this season?

This week before Lent, would be a great time to examine what it is that stunts your spiritual growth and what it is that causes it to blossom. Maybe even go a step further, what will lead to spiritual growth not only for you individually, but for your family? For our church? Commit yourself to a plan that will put you and yours on the path to spiritual growth, nurturing what has been neglected, so that you may blossom and bear fruit.

This morning I turned on my computer, checked my email, and there was a message from facebook. You have “One new friend request.” Yay, who could it be? I experienced a moment of excitement, someone new wants to be my friend. Someone has looked me up, sought me out, and taken the time to request my friendship. I click on it, hmmm… don’t quite know who this is, so I look at her photos.Oh wow, I haven’t seen her or her family in years. Now, I have the power: I can accept the request and catch up with an old friend or quietly ignore it and go on about my day. Oops. I accidentally rolled over ignore and zap it’s gone. What to do? I can let it go, or I can look her up and request that she be my friend.

I admit it–I’m a facebooker. Some people love facebook and others love to hate it. I love that I can share photos instantly with my family, most of whom live in other states. I love that I can “keep up” with what’s going on in their lives. Yes, there are dangers. Yes, it can be very superficial. Yes, it can be a time drainer. I’m not going to debate the good vs. the pitfalls and dangers of facebook, that’s a whole other article in itself. But, today I’m focusing on relationships. On facebook, you can classify your relationship status: married, single, engaged, etc. Maybe the best choice is the one that says “It’s complicated,” because really, they are, relationships are complicated. Relationships look a little easier on facebook. You can quickly catch up with an old friend, and then just kind of let them sit out there in cyberspace. They remain on your friend list, they can see your photos and status updates if you choose, but you don’t really have to interact with them. Thank goodness we have real relationships outside of cyberspace. What would relationships be without hearing a friend’s voice, feeling the touch of their hand, or seeing the look in their eyes? Yea, relationships are complicated, but we were made for this purpose. We were made for fellowship with Christ Jesus and with our neighbors. At the chapel, this has been a month focusing on relationships. I hope you have gained some insight into your relationships, taken away some advice on how to make them better. I know I have. I know I have spent more time this month focusing away from myself, and my busyness, and focusing more on various relationships and what I need to put into them to make them flourish.

Did you know you have a friend request right now? Do you feel the excitement? Someone wants to begin or rekindle a relationship with you. Someone has searched for you, sought you out, and is waiting for your reply. This request isn’t new. It’s been sitting there waiting for your response. Have you accepted it before? or Have you quietly ignored it? Did you catch up briefly with this old friend and then, just let the relationship sit out their stagnant? or Are you actively involved in the relationship? Take the time to accept this friend request. This one doesn’t have to be complicated. John 15:13-15 “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

Staying Together

I’m writing this on Valentine’s Day, so, of course, my first thoughts on “Staying Together” are of married relationships, though the information really applies to all types of relationships. My husband and I are from families that have been riddled with divorce. Both sides of our family have experienced multiple divorces that include our parents, and siblings. Scary. I think seeing so many relationships fail, makes us very aware that we need to treat our relationship with care. Our marriage, even after twenty-one years, is a work in progress. Everyday we make mistakes, and everyday we learn a little bit more about what works and what doesn’t. I remember sitting beside my grandfather at his fiftieth anniversary, and after all the congratulations, and happy stories I heard him say under his breath, “It hasn’t always been easy, if only you knew!” Fast forward another twenty years to their seventieth anniversary, when asked to give advice on how to stay together their combined answers were “Patience, tolerance, listening, affection and knowing when to keep your mouth shut.” Add to that a “sense of humor,” and “talking things out,” ingredients that have served Dave and Kay Hanson well in their marriage (If you didn’t hear Dave and Kay’s talk on commitment yet, you are in for a treat!)

I asked my husband what he thought attributed to our “staying togetherness” and after his first answer, “My Patience” and a few chuckles as he laughed at his own cleverness, he said, “our ability (willingness) to work together.” I have to agree, with both his answers, he is the most patient man I know. (I think bragging on your husband in writing is good for a relationship too!) I also think that working together– realizing that we are working toward the same goals, even when we butt heads, is what gets us through. Like it or not, fairy tale relationships don’t exist. Relationships between lovers, between friends, between siblings, between boss/employees, between coworkers, between yourself and God—Every relationship takes work, every relationship requires that you look outside yourself and your own needs, every relationship requires giving, every relationship requires time, every relationship requires commitment, every relationship requires sacrifice, every relationship requires give and take (and not always balanced give and take). Even when you give all those things, unfortunately, regardless of commitment, sometimes relationships still fail. Fortunately, one of those relationships comes with a guarantee not to fail, a lasting guarantee that he will not let go. That is why we need to start with our relationship with Christ. Get that one relationship right, commit to it and allow your other relationships to flourish out of the resulting love.

Let’s review our advice on staying together: Pray, Commit, Love, Laugh, Be Patient, Talk it out or keep your mouth shut, work together, learn from your mistakes, and put Christ first. May your relationships be strong, lasting and full of life and love.

Have you given yourself the opportunity to be changed by small groups?

Last week was “Groupapalooza.” I hope that you found at least one group to participate in. If you’ve signed up, the next step is to actually show up. I know it can be intimidating if you’re new to small groups. I know, I feel those butterflies every time I go into a new group. Every time, it’s been worth it. Each group changed me in a different way (all for the better). So, I thought I’d share a few of my experiences with you:
Financial Peace University.changed. my. life. I have to admit that my husband and I didn’t manage money very well, for the first ummmm…20 years or so of our marriage. We just didn’t have the knowledge or the know how to manage our money. We took financial peace about two years ago…and we are still following the plan. All of our money is budgeted, we know where we are spending every dollar, how much we are going to give, how much we are going to save. We tithe first, instead of giving out of our left over. We have money in place for emergencies. We are not yet where we want to be financially, but we are well on our way. I also feel equipped to teach my children how to be financially responsible.
P90X Yoga. changed.my.life. (and my body shape) Because of this small group, I started doing the whole p90x program. I got healthier, I got stronger, I got muscles! Working out with the group motivated, inspired and encouraged me to keep going.
Chat Groups I participated in several video chat groups. This type of group is cool because you get to really know “church peeps” that maybe you haven’t had the chance to get to know before. In a small group like this you have time to chat, get to know each other and reflect on real life topics. I also hosted a couple of these groups at work. Hosting a small group changed me…it gave me an opportunity to interact with coworkers in a way I hadn’t before. We got to pray together, pray for each other, hear each others needs and just go beyond the everyday work stuff. It gave me a chance to really get know my coworkers.

Each group contributed to growth for me during different seasons of my life–the groups increased my biblical knowledge and understanding, provided accountability, gave me insights into the thoughts, needs and beliefs of others, and opened the door to new friendships. I have to get real and say, it’s not always easy to make the time in this busy world…excuses to not go are readily available. You have to get past that, just make the effort, just do it. Your life will be changed, and your presence will change lives.

Taking the Time

What does it take to cultivate a relationship? to keep it strong? to keep it going? I was thinking about this yesterday, when I got a phone call from my best friend from high school. She and I were best friends from 5th grade all the way through High School. After graduation, we went to different colleges, moved away and somehow just lost touch.. How does this happen? We missed out on two decades of friendship, because we didn’t make the effort or put in the time required to keep the relationship strong. Truth is, it wouldn’t have taken that much— a card, a letter, a phone call, email, texts, and even prayers. But, lazyness, busyness, something took over and well, the relationship fizzled out. The cool thing is that one phone call, put us on track to building that relationship again.

Some relationships fizzle out and others stay strong. About 24 years ago, I was away at college and having a difficult time, feeling kind of isolated and alone, when I received a Valentine Card from a friend who lived in another state. I didn’t really know this friend very well, but we would write letters to each other occassionally (yes this was before email!) This friend had taken the time to pick out a card, purchase it, write an encouraging message, address it and mail it to me. Seemingly a small effort, that made a huge difference. You see, this friend later became my boyfriend, and eventually my husband. He is a husband who understands that relationships take time…whether it’s in the little things like putting a little note in my lunch box, or the mundane things like doing housework together, or the necessary things like caring for me when I’m sick, or the boring things like listening to me complain about work, he gets it. Don’t get me wrong, relationships take alot of work and alot of time, it’s not always easy, but so worth it.

What about our relationship with God? For me, sometimes it’s like that friend from highschool, I could drop him a line, but well, there are really other things I’m focused on, so I put it off a little while, and then a longer while, and then it seems I don’t really know him anymore, he’s a distant memory. Other times, he’s as close as my husband who I want to involve in every part of my life. Why? Because sometimes I do my part and make the effort, put in the time and other times I don’t. God is there doing his part always, but to keep the relationship strong I also have to make the effort. It’s like that one phone call with my high school friend, if I reach out he’s there, ready to help me get back on track. He wants me to spend time with him. He wants me to spend time praying, listening, and acting. Once I put in the time and effort our relationship becomes stronger, even amazing! But, I have to be willing to Love him fully. Mark 12:30-31 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.”

Cultivating a relationship, Loving—means taking risks, putting yourself out there. If we are going to follow his commands, than that’s what we must do. We must take the risk, Love him and then take the risk to love others. How? Taking a meal to someone who is sick, sending a card to a friend, picking up the phone to say hello, inviting a friend to go with you to a small group…I don’t know what God is asking you to do today, but I do know you should be asking him, as should I, God what do you require of me? God, what steps can I take, what effort can I make, what time can I give to build relationships today? Ask him, take the risk, and love—in return you will be loved.

This Sunday, I watched the service from home, as the whole family was sick. The thing is that I attended the backyard service last week, so watching online this week meant the broadcast would be from the main Sanctuary. For me this meant, hearing Abra’s same message again. My first thought, admittedly, was “Oh I’ve already seen this, already heard this message, already written on it, there is no need to watch it again. I’ll just have to email Mandy and let her know I can’t write the recap this week. Afterall, my house is riddled with illness, I don’t really feel like writing.” But, before I turned off the computer Abra began to speak. I was drawn to her words. She began to present the same message again, yes it was slightly different, but ultimately–the same message again–and I realized, yes the message is the same, but it’s not really Abra’s message that is the same. It’s God’s message. God has the same message for us that he had yesterday, the same message that he had for us last year, the same message he’ll have for us tomorrow. In our human-ness, in our stubbornness, in our self-centeredness, we NEED to hear this same message again and again. We continue the struggle in keeping our focus on him, in keeping him as our “baseline.” Abra reminded us that God’s desire is for us to have a deeper relationship with him and at the same time the enemy wants us to move further away from God. What are we to do to keep our focus on God? We intentionally make choices to put him at the forefront of all we do. We look to the examples Jesus gave us. Jesus was the example. He lived a life of service. He washed the feet of his disciples and told them that just as he washed their feet, they should wash each other’s feet. That is the same message he has for us, wash each other’s feet. Serve one another. God requires us to love him, love one another and serve him. God doesn’t ask us to do more than we can handle, once we commit to serve he gives us what we need to follow through. As we serve, changes take place. We’re serving others and at the same time we are being served, our heart is being changed.

It may be a different week, a different day, different joys, different struggles, but when you strip it down to the baseline, you find him. His love never changes, his message is the same, as the song says “You stay the same through the ages, your love never changes.” God is calling us to move, to take the step, once we take the step changes start to happen. Prayerfully consider what steps you’ll take today.

So, I ‘ve spent the better part of the last few days doing two things: planning my daughter’s “Wizard of Oz” birthday party and taking down Christmas decorations. I’m a planner and I love to come up with a theme, make cool decorations and serve party foods. It’s fun to plan the party, it’s fun to be a part of the party. It takes a great deal of work, time, and effort to plan a party. What’s the point? The point of the birthday party is to celebrate the birth of our children. That’s why we’ll put together a guest list of friends, family, neighbors and coworkers. We want them to share in our joy. It’s the same with all the Christmas decorations and parties, we celebrate the birth of Jesus and want to share that with others.

This Sunday morning, I couldn’t make it to The Chapel, so I watched online. It’s great to be able to watch online, but it’s not the same to watch a party from the outside, to look through the window as to actually be a guest present at the party. That’s right, I said a party, not a “service” but a “party.” I could see they were jammin’ to the music, they were throwing beachballs, it was a good time. It made me smile to watch from home, but at the same time, I knew I was missing out. Why Party at The Chapel? Because at The Chapel the vision is to become more like Christ.

Jesus loved to party. Today, Jay referred to Luke 15, where Jesus was attending a dinner party with sinners, at the home of a sinner. He was hanging out with tax collectors, prostitutes, the outcast. Not only was he hanging out with them but they seemed at ease with each other. This was the norm for Jesus, he partied with the lost. He didn’t conform to their ways, instead he brought light into the darkness. He sought out the lost. This was the point of attending the party. This was the point of Jesus’ coming. This was the gift that God gave us. Christ came so that we might be made right with the Father. By accepting this gift, we are now able to stand before the Father for the benefit of others. We can party with the lost, we can bring light into the darkness. We now know the point of the party.

At the beginning of this article, I talked about preparing for the party, the fun of the party— but the taking down of the decorations, the cleaning up after the party is not so fun. I’m looking out the window right now watching my husband and neighbors take down the outside Christmas decorations. It’s a big reminder that Christmas is over, the New Year is here. We prepared, we partied, it’s over. Or is it? We know the point of the party. So, I say, it’s far from over. I say, Let’s get this party started! How? This week, join the prayer party. Commit to pray for specific friends, neighbors, relatives, coworkers…who don’t know Jesus, who haven’t accepted their party invitation yet. Pray, send invitations, and join us next week as the party continues!

Happy New Year!

“He stared down at Who-ville! The Grinch popped his eyes! Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise! Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small, Was singing! Without any presents at all! He hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same! And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so? It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!” And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! Maybe Christmas he thought, “doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”And what happened then? Well in Whoville they say That the Grinch’s small heart Grew three sizes that day!

Forgive me, but after almost two months of taking my daughter to dance rehearsals and performances of “The Grinch”—that’s exactly what I thought of during Abra’s sermon on Simple Love. As I pause, in this busy season of decorating, cooking, festivities, gift buying, gift giving—I can’t help but wonder, what would it be like if it was all suddenly taken away, would I show the world peace, hope, love and joy—like those legendary who’s in Whoville. Or more importantly, would I show the love to the one responsible for taking it away? What about the rest of the year? Sure, it’s easy to love those who love me, but what about those who are, well a bit harder to love? How can I love like Christ? Well, Abra, gave us a jumpstart—first of all we can look in the book (no, not the Grinch, that other important book!) Check out John 3: 16 and John 4:21.

Abra gave us these main points to reflect on:
*source of love-God
*model of love-Jesus Christ
*the manifestation of Love-Love for others
*the extent of love-sacrifice of life
*the results of love-abiding presence of God and life

May you find love and give love, this holiday season. May you be the one who by reflecting Christ, causes hearts to grow in the “Grinches” of this world.
Merry Christmas!

Sunday morning in the backyard was just what my soul needed. What an awesome worship time–The music, the set, the talk created a “right in your living room” comfy, cozy, friendly, experience. Sunday was my first “free” day, after an insanely busy couple of months. It was such a “free” day, that after the worship service, I was able to enjoy lunch out with the family, return home and sit on the couch with the Christmas tree on and sip hot tea, wrap Christmas gifts, snuggle under a blanket and watch a Christmas movie with my daughter and doggie –and yes, even take a nap. Simple pleasures. I have to say, that often, even when I have time for such simple pleasures, I don’t enjoy them, because I feel “guilty”—like I should be doing something else, more work, more cleaning, etc. Sunday, however, I felt free enough to enJOY the experiences, to enjoy the gifts God has put in my life. Why? Because Drew (Thompson) talked to us about tithing and partying. Who knew the two went together? Seriously, check it out yourself in Deuteronomy 14:22, wait don’t stop there…read all the way through 29. That’s right, God wants us to enjoy worship, God wants us to celebrate. God wants us to include others who have less than we do in the celebration. How can you experience great joy this Christmas season? You are in luck…Drew left us some great “party” tips from Deuteronomy:
1. Enjoy the worship of Christ Fully.
2. Enjoy it in a way that honors God.
3. Enjoy it in a way that includes other people.
It doesn’t mean you have to spend alot of money, it doesn’t mean you have to work really hard. Search your heart, share the abundance, share the joy. When you firgure it out, tell someone about it, by sharing you may inspire someone else to experience their own joy this season. What better party could there be than partying with Jesus? May you and yours experience a Merry Christmas!

Sunday Jay’s teaching centered around Ephesians 4: 17-32. Here Paul gives us God’s call to arms, giving us the What, the How and then he calls us to Charge ahead and Do it.

Our marching orders:
What? We (as Christians) are called to live differently.
How? Live a Holy life, Live wisely, and Live a life of love
Do: Fight well, Understand who your enemy is, and Pray

Pretty straight forward right? It sounds easy enough in the comfort of the walls of my living room, in my freshly cleaned house, in the nice air-conditioning, where I am eating a snack, on vacation from my job, and working on this article uninterrupted today. Yes, from here I can live differently, I can be nice to others, I can make good choices, I think I’m a pretty good person, and I know God. Yes I can do it. Reality check — all it takes is one phone call, one unpleasant encounter, one illness, one stressful situation, and I can be knocked off my high horse and find myself smack in the middle of the battle. What happens next all depends on my preparation. If I’m totally unprepared, I am going to fail. I’m going to crack under the pressure. I’m going to be short tempered. I’m going to react in anger or bitterness. I’m going to think that people are my enemy, when in fact the war is not with other people at all. I’m going to fail to realize that, as Jay said, “sometimes the difficulty is necessary to produce the character God wants in you” and I’m going to give up instead of persevering through. So, how can I prepare myself before going into battle? I can make sure I spend time close to God, I can make sure I’m in his word, I can make sure I’m allowing myself opportunities to be filled up with his spirit (worship, small groups, quiet time). I can put on the Armour of God and load up on ammunition (prayer) and then I will know that I am prepared for battle. This doesn’t mean it will be easy, doesn’t mean I won’t be human and make mistakes, but it means I am making a choice. I am CHOOSING to live differently, I am accepting the opportunity to love others as God loves me.

Last week on the news, I saw this story about man in a 14 foot aluminum john boat who found himself in the middle of an alligator feeding frenzy. He filmed it, and then what did he do? He stuck to his goal–he eased right through them and went fishing. He was prepared to go fishing, and moved right through the obstacles and stuck to his goal. To fully understand, check out the video: http://www.news4jax.com/video/24376428/
That’s how I want to be. I want to be so prepared and so committed to the goal that I won’t be scared off, or knocked off course by distractions. I’ll charge right through, keeping my eye on the prize, and making my way straight to him.

Are you ready? Get Set… Charge!

I’ve been told today by two different people that I was “the answer to their prayers.” When we hear someone say that, we may take it lightly; but have you ever thought that you may literally be the answer to someone’s prayers? God may use you, allow you to be the answer to a prayer. As for myself, I believe that he would use me to be the answer to prayers more often; but I’m not paying attention, or I’m too self-absorbed in following my own plan, or trying to control what I think God’s plan for me is. When I let go, open my heart to him, and listen, I feel him nudging me in a direction to take action, to help someone, or to do something a little more out of the ordinary than I normally would.

As I sit writing this article, I can see a small bushy tree just outside my window. That bush made me think of the burning bush in Jay’s sermon this week from Exodus 3. I found myself asking God, “You know if you would appear to me like that, as a flame in a burning bush, than I would know for certain when YOU are talking to me, I would clearly know that it’s you speaking.” God said, “I have appeared to you that clearly. I sent you an email, I messaged you on facebook, I was in line behind you in the grocery store — if the bush started burning right now, would you really look closely enough to see me?” God’s right (of course!) I probably wouldn’t see him in the burning bush, I would call the fire department so they could put the fire out and I’d be in too big of a state of panic and stress to see God in it. He’s much more likely to get my attention through email.

Sunday, Jay told us that God is going to do great things and he wants to use us in it. It is a privilege and a joy to be included in his plan. However, God can do it without me — without us. If I ignored that email, ignored that facebook message, or kept my back turned to the person in line behind me at the grocery store, than God could easily give someone else the opportunity to help answer the prayers. Some of you may be thinking email, facebook, that’s not how God communicates with people, that’s too ordinary. So what should our relationship with God be like? Jay showed us that we can find a model of God’s relationship with man in the story of Moses and the burning bush.

In Exodus 3:1 God got Moses’ attention. He did this as he appeared to Moses in the midst of an ordinary, normal day. We can see here how the ordinary can become extra-ordinary, how when we are fully present and open to God our eyes can be opened to the miracles. In Exodus 3:3 Moses responded to God, Moses heard God calling him by name and he answered. In Exodus 3:5-6 God reveals his character.

It is here that we are reminded of God’s holiness, of God’s bigness, where we are reminded that our view of God is much too small, where we realize the greatness and powerfulness of our God. In Exodus 3:7 God reveals his heart.

When we allow God inside, we are moved with the compassion, care and love for others as God does. God reveals his plan in Exodus 3:8. This is the part where we realize that God’s plan is so much bigger than our plan. Finally, in Exodus 3:10/11 God Reveals the part that Moses is to play in the plan, and Moses doubts himself. I can’t do this. Who am I to do this? God’s answer? “I will be with you.” (Take some time to read/study Exodus 3 this week)

I know that my part is small and that God doesn’t need me to be a part of his plan. Yet, I also know that I long to be a part of his plan, to be passionate about what he is passionate about and that I am honored to be included, and I desire such a relationship with God. I want my life to be less ordinary and more extra-ordinary and I want that for all those around me. I know it can happen, because I know that HE will be with me. Do you desire this for your life? Do you know that he is with you? Look for the miracles, look for the burning bush, listen to what he’s saying to you and take the opportunity to be the answer to someone’s prayer.

My husband often says “God thumped me today.” What he means by that is that somehow he was gently reprimanded, or maybe reminded is a better word, that his actions or words were maybe not what they should have been. That’s what happened to me in church yesterday. As I listened to Jay talking about Biblical models of friendship with others and friendship with God, I realized that not only do I need to work on my own friendships, but that I sometimes unintentionally hinder my husband’s friendships. Through the Biblical model of friendship between Jonathan and David in 1 Samuel 18, Jay identified for us three key elements in cultivating friendships: time, commitment, cost. My husband is a giver…he will do whatever it takes to give to a friend in need (which usually means fixing, repairing or building something), setting aside his own agenda to do what he can to fulfill the need. I would like to think I am that way too, but I find myself fussing a bit about the time he gives to help friends out on his time off–on “our” time off. I have even gone so far as to say, “What do you get out of it?” (GASP!) Would I really want him to not help? No. Is he giving time away that is detrimental to our family, or to our own friendship? I have to say no. What he IS doing is making a COMMITMENT to give his TIME to friends and neighbors regardless of the COST of physical labor, sweat and sometimes a nagging wife. So, God thumped me today. God, I hear you. In this crazy mixed up world, I’ve once again let busyness rob me of experiencing the awesome friendship you offer. I am so busy working, cleaning, tidying trying to make my world perfect but I can never do it. I realize that those are not the things that make life perfect. Your friendship is. God, I’m making a commitment to you today to put in the time and cost to cultivate our friendship; for it is only then that I can be a true friend to others following your command in John 15:12 “Love each other as I have loved you.”

“Did you sign up for a small group?” That’s the first thing I was asked by our instructional coach at school when I got to school Monday morning. It’s awesome to have friends who are believers, friends who will hold you accountable, friends who will pray for you, friends who will pray with you, and friends who will “stand in the gap for you” when needed. It’s even more rewarding to be such a friend. That’s what keeps me going when times are tough, and allows me to share my joy when times are good.

So, did you? Did you sign up for a small group? I was big on excuses this year—no time, live too far, too tired, etc. But, the Chapel didn’t leave any room for my excuses, they even have online groups,or groups that only meet once, and groups on every day of the week, and different times of the day. So, my family and I are able to participate in groups that compliment rather than contradict our schedules. I couldn’t honestly say we were too busy for every group. So, if you’re like me and signed up, start praying and get ready to get in the game. If you couldn’t make it or if the excuses got the best of you– It’s not too late…check out the Chapel website for more information. Not sure if you should or which one to join, or how it will fit in your schedule? Start with prayer. I’m pretty sure that if you listen, you’ll find your group. As a teacher, I’ve had days where I felt that I could stand on my head, put on a clown wig and and still feel like no one was listening or paying attention. I wonder if God ever feels like that? Sunday our Chapel Campus was transformed into the “Big Top” complete with clowns, popcorn, snowcones, cotton candy and our pastor in a dunking booth. Did God Get your attention? Maybe there was a message in there for you! Don’t miss it!

Jay walked us through Luke 5:17 on Sunday. Jay asked us to consider which character we would be?
*The paralyzed man: who was helpless, couldn’t get to Jesus in a period of life where he couldn’t pull himself out, needed somebody to stand in the Gap and pray for him because he couldn’t
*A friend who brings other friends with them (allowing God to work through you to bless others)
*One who climbs on top of the roof to get in because it’s too crowded OR one who turns around and leaves because the parking lot is full
*A faithful friend who will carry others to Jesus when their legs get knocked out from underneath them
*like the Pharisees, who were critical judgmental, one who makes excuses not to participate
*one who will make the choice to obey Jesus, to get up, pick up his mat and go home.
Circumstances brought the man to Jesus. Circumstances led you to the Chapel, a place where our mission is to help you become more like Jesus.
Won’t you pick up your mat and walk?

Sunday, when Drew Thompson admitted that he was lacking in sense of direction, I could definitely identify. I too, am directionally challenged. It’s really not as bad as it used to be, since the invention of GPS. I can hit the button for the maps app on my phone and a little arrow will flash showing my exact location! I can zoom in and see all the surrounding street blocks and important land marks. I can zoom out and see surrounding cities, ocean, etc. I’m still directionally challenged but now I have a tool to help me connect the dots and see the big picture, and help me navigate my way when I get a little (or a lot!) turned around.
Spiritually we can get lost, turned around, knocked off course in life and find ourselves in need of a navigational tool. God has provided such a tool, the ultimate map app available to us– the Bible. We may need to zoom out and look at the whole story, before moving on. That’s what Drew did on Sunday–he helped us zoom out to see the big picture and found places in Genesis in which we zoomed in.. It is here that we can begin to connect the dots.
1. There is a Ruler (Genesis 1 and 2). I get a little turned around on this one sometimes. I take for granted our loving, forgiving, relational God and forget that HE IS THE RULER. Everything is his. He was here before anything else. I am here because he created me. My plans are not necessarily his plans. I should not be telling God what to do, or how to answer prayers. God loves me and takes care of me, but I have to listen to him and follow his way so that his purpose can be fulfilled. I should be asking what his plans are, rather than telling him mine.
2. There is a Ruin-(Genesis 3, 4, 6-8, 11). Ah, this dot makes some sense of this crazy world in which we live. There is Ruin. Ruin in the world, Ruin inside me. Ruin caused by sin. One seemingly small act, one act of sin, can have such a diverse and deep affect. If we stop and zoom out here, we can see that there is Ruin, but at the same time there is a Ruler.
3. There is a Remedy. Simultaneously there is Ruin, but there is a Ruler. Our omnipotent Ruler, God works through the bad, uses the bad and creates something beautiful, something permanent, The remedy.

Sunday, our pastor introduced the new theme for his talks, Doors. I’ve never really thought much about doors before. Maybe it’s because, well, I can sometimes be not very observant. I think I become focused on one thing and block out all the others. For instance, apparently, there were doors throughout the parking lot at church on Sunday, and on the stage in the sanctuary. Somehow, I didn’t notice any of them. I did see the doors on stage after the service began and the pastor started talking about them. Never even saw the doors in the parking lot, did see one on the walkway on the way out, but only because my husband pointed it out.

So, I’ve been focusing on doors a bit this week. Our pastor, Jay Hanson, started his talk on Easter by defining doors. A means of approach or access. Doors are passageways, portals, a means of leaving an old space and entering a new space.

So, the past few days, I’ve been thinking about this. First of all, the adoption agency that helped us adopt our daughter, was named, The Open Door adoption agency. They opened the doors to a precious new life, (a whole other blog topic)

I’m focusing this morning on Actual Doors:

For example, when I leave my kitchen door and step outside of the house onto the back patio of the pool deck (on a sunshiny spring or summer day)…it’s like walking into my own little paradise, the flowers, the sparkling pool, the palms, etc. When I walk out the front door of my house, I’m leaving my safe haven and entering into the world, a bit of uncertainty as to what may lie ahead.

When I walk through the door of the office at school, I’m greeted with smiling faces, bright colors, and lots of busy people rushing around.

When I walk through the door of my mom’s home, I smell sweet fragrances, and feel the love of comforts that only mom’s house can provide.

When I walk through the doors of walmart…well let’s just say it’s the opposite of the paradise of leaving my kitchen door.

I can also create what others will experience as they enter through doors into spaces that I’ve already inhabited…my home, or my classroom: I can choose to create an environment where others can thrive, feel safe and welcomed.

Spiritually speaking, Jesus opened the door to his father by giving his life and taking on our sins. We can choose to step through the door, where we will receive mercy and grace. We should go running through and leap across the threshold, and party like never before, rejoicing in his presence. As a result, living as a changed person we can create environments for others to see him in us, inviting them inside. Inviting them not only with words, but more importantly with our actions, living like we believe.

So begins my journey today. Be it spiritual, symbolic, or maybe just to increase my observance. I’m going to pause before I cross through each doorway this week and observe what I’m leaving and experience what I’m entering. From the mundane to the spiritual, I’ll journal some of my reflections here. Then, I hope to focus on what I can bring with me to others as I enter doors, or what I offer as others enter doors and come into my presence.

What about you? What doors are open for you? What choices are you making?

In a recent sermon, by David Herndon at the Chapel, David talked about getting back to the basics…being still, waiting, listening, receiving. Sounds good…but have you tried that lately? I’ve had a fabulous summer, lots of time to relax. But, this week was my first time all alone. My daughter has been in tennis camp during the day, and I have had several hours a day, completely alone (we have four teen-age boys staying with us this week, plus our own two children…so when the house is empty it feels really empty!) So, what have I done with my time…cleaned the house, cleaned stuff out, exercised, facebooked, budgeting, had a pool party (which got rained on), cleaned up from the party…basically lots of cleaning, and web surfing. Being still, praying, waiting, receiving… I’m finding this difficult. Hard to turn off the electronics, tune out the world and just be still. It almost makes me nervous to be alone with everything turned off…why? I think it’s because I’ve been pushing so hard for so long…college, work, family, that to just have stillness is a shock (should be easy for a former yoga instructor…maybe I need to spend some time on the mat). Today, when everyone leaves…I’m unplugging some things, maybe I’ll just start with 30 minutes: no texting, no facebook, no internet, no phone calls, no cleaning…just me and God time. It’s a date, the invitation has been there all along…I’ve R.S.V.P.’d, he’s waiting, all I have to do is show up. How about you? Have you responded to the invitation…he’s made all the preparations, go ahead, give it a try. You’ll be glad you did!As for me…I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Wow, it’s been a long time since I blogged! Maybe it’s because I’ve actually been sleeping all night. Maybe it’s because I was working on finishing my degree. Praise the Lord…I have completed my Ed.S!!!! I wrote an entry once about waking up in the night hearing God entitled,”Doesn’t God know I need sleep?” Well, I felt that way when I woke up at 1:30 a.m this morning. It’s 3:40 now, I have to get up at 5:30 (at the latest) and here I am AWAKE. I think there is a difference between just plain insominia, and when God wants to spend time with you. Insominia for me is when I can’t sleep because I am too worried about all I have to do…but when God calls it’s different. For me, it’s like I just know that I am supposed to get up and spend time in God’s word, and in prayer, and when I do I am sooo blessed with the message I receive. Although I know God is wonderful, all powerful, loving and miraculous…I am still always amazed that he provides the perfect scriptures at the perfect time. The first one I read this morning (if you can call this morning) was Luke 6:12: Jesus went up a hill to pray and spent the whole night there praying to God. The whole devotional reading was about “Hanging out with God” Last night, in a membership class at church we listed three things we loved to do: I listed time with family, friends and going to beach/pool. God is certainly family/friend…but honestly he was not what I thought of….however, that should have been first on my list, spending time with God IS the most exciting, most important, most inspiring, most worthy part of every day!

The second reading was from Ecclesiastes 9:7-10 “Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do.” We serve an awesome God. He has provided us with so many joyful opportunites. He delights in our joy! We are commisioned to serve him with a joyful heart. So many people trudge through life, complaining, dreading, moaning and groaning about work, chores, etc. I’ve been there before. I complained about my job, counted the days down til vacation (sometimes I still do But, What a difference it makes when we treat all that we’ve been given as a GIFT from God. What difference would it make in your job today, if you got up this morning and sincerely said, “God, thank you for giving me this job, I am so excited to go to work today.” And then, lived it out. We miss out on so much joy with negative attitudes. Whatever you dread today, whatever you must do, try it out with a joyful, giving heart…enjoying the gifts that we’ve been given. (For me, I’ll probably enjoy the coffee too, for that gift will help me get through the day on just a few hours sleep. Did they have coffee back in Jesus’ time?)

Check out this website for some thought provoking quotes on forgivesness…

http://www.forgivenessweb.com/RdgRm/Quotationpage.html

Here are a few of my favorites:

Holmgren

Seeing with better eyes “We can recognize that the offender
is a valuable human being who struggles with the same needs,
pressures, and confusions that we struggle with. We will recognize
that the incident really may not have been about us in the first place.
Instead it was about the wrongdoer’s misguided attempt to meet his
or her own needs.
As we regard offenders from this point of view
(regardless of whether they repent and regardless of what
they have done or suffered),
we will be in a position to forgive them.

Paul Boese

Forgiveness does not change the past, but it
does enlarge the future.

Bishop Desmond Tutu

It is one of the things about forgiveness you have to remember. It is not
spiritual. It is part of real politics.

In forgiving, people are not being asked to forget. On the contrary, it is important to remember, so that we should not let such atrocities happen again. Forgiveness does not mean condoning what has been done. It means taking what happened seriously…drawing out the sting in the memory that threatens our entire existence.

This morning, I decided to resume getting up at 4:30 for exercise and then devotional time before getting ready for work. This had been my routine for quite a while, but I quit when I got sick. Months of being sick off and on, coupled with life’s ups and downs made it easier and easier to let this time go. I justified why I shouldn’t get up. It became easier to stay up a little later, and sleep in a bit later the next morning. So today I got up, and instead of a gentle yoga routine…went right into a new “abs on the ball” routine. Let me just say, it would have been a great sitcom like “I Love Lucy” as the ball kept rolling away from me. I certainly do not have the strength and coordination that I had before. Why? Because it takes discipline. It takes routine practice. It takes time to reach a certain performance level, it takes time to continue to increase strength. It was easier to return to my devotional time(at least the Bible didn’t roll away from me)…still discipline is required. Daily commitment, daily focus and attention, purposefully making time in your day allows faith to grow, to strengthen. This is true with any relationship…relationships take work, planning, purpose, commitment. Sometimes you may not feel like working at it…but you push through, sometimes you may fall off the ball, or it may slip away and you have to crawl over and get it, sometimes you may have to laugh at yourself, but if you build that foundation and discipline for yourself it will be easier to push through until you are stronger. Find strength in knowing that God has given us the foundation and he is with us each step of the way.

Recently…some things have happened in my family that seemed unforgivable.

When I first heard what was going on, I was so angry. I must admit, I had a feeling I’ve never felt before, a feeling of Hate. I prayed that the hate might be taken away. I prayed that I would be able to forgive.

I realized that I don’t have the right to hate, to not forgive. I have not, do not live a perfect life that does not call for love and forgiveness.None of us do.

As I was reviewing last week’s sermon in church, and attempting to write a devotional from it for the newsletter. The word’s seemed so valuable right now.Life is not easy. Jesus did not live an EASY life.

God is actively involved in our life, he paid the ultimate price…He is pursuing us, he loves us in all the pain and the grief. He is not some far away concept. He came to save ALL people for ALL time. He loved us to the point of leaving Heaven. He gives us the strength to b e sustained in our struggles. God does not make it easy, but he makes it possible. While we are still sinners, God comes after us. (Romans 5:8)

We are not alone. We must make the choice. We cannot be victims of circumstances. We cannot blame others for wrongs in our lives. We cannot blame others for our actions. We cannot blame others for the choices we make. Whether we believe it or not, God has given all of us a great gift. He has given us a new chance, a new life, We cannot change the past. But we have the power right now to shape our present and our future. WE can choose to live in self-pity, to continue to abuse ourselves, to abuse the ones we love. OR we can take our gift and set out purposely to denounce those things that cause hurt to ourselves and others, and pick up our cross as Jesus did, and live for God. Jesus did not “feel like” being nailed to a cross, and being humiliate d and spit upon. He cried out…God would you take this cup from me….but your will be done.

Whatever you are facing…take the hand of God, pick up your cross, get on your knees and ask for forgiveness, recognize your blessings, praise God, and live the rest of your days for him. See him in everyone you encounter, and let everyone you encounter see him in You. For you are worthy, You are a child of God.

As I face important decisions today I visualize myself standing on a platform with a tightrope in front of me…God reaching out his hand to me. We are high in the air. He is saying “Do you trust me? Hold my hand and step out…walk in faith, for I will guide you.”

So he awaits my answer, for my action. Will I step out, excited about the new adventure, mixed with some fear of falling, but knowing God is my guide and my safety net. OR Will I stand on the platform frozen in fear, unable to take a step.

Father God, I am your child and I trust you. Open my eyes to see where you’re leading and give me the boldness and the heart to follow.

Ive spent many quiet times praying about and studying about hearing God. So, about a month ago, I heard God telling me to do something. I was sure about it. It was almost an audible voice. It woke me up night after night. It echoed in scripture. It echoed in my daily devotionals. He was not asking for something I could not do. But, he was asking for something I didn’t particularly want to give up. Something very materialistic. It was to give something specific that we owned to the church auction. I pleaded with God, I tried to bargain with God….I’ll do this instead…. No, I kept hearing the same message from God. The hardest thing about this was that God was asking for something that I felt my husband wouldn’t understand. I finally got the nerve to bring it up to my husband, who said, “I’m sure God has bigger things to worry about…that is your own voice you hear.” (just what I was afraid of that my husband would think I was crazy) I must say though that my husband told me to do whatever I needed to do. So then, I prayed and prayed that God would lay it on my husband’s heart …that he would clearly hear the same thing. But, the church auction came and went…and nothing happened. I didn’t act. My husband didn’t seem to hear from God. What happened was that I had seemingly distanced myself from God. I quit getting up at 4:30 every morning to spend time with God. Maybe I was trying to hide from God. I was disappointed in myself..still am for not doing what I was sure he was asking. I tried to tell God how to do something rather than obeying what he asked of me. Instead of experiencing the joy of obeying God, I experienced turmoil.
